The sexual abuse the boy Ignacio suffers at the hands of Father Monolo is largely the contributing factor in the way his life turns out. The answer may be its subject matter: gay teens. This 1996 film was the first in a virtual tidal wave of movies and books in which the sensitive teen misfit with a best female friend falls for the jock who turns out to be gay. But hey, haven’t most of us been there, on one side or other of the misfit/jock divide? This movie, based on a stage play by Jonathan Harvey (who also wrote the film’s screenplay), was originally intended for television, but it was so successful that the producers decided to give it a theatrical release. And let’s not forget the inspired soundtrack of Mama Cass songs — an example of a perfect fit between music and movie subject matter. Initiated by an unfounded accusation, Marshall and his wife Nancy (Nicole Kidman) send Jared to a conversion therapy assessment camp under the direction of Victor Sykes (Joel Edgerton), the aim of the camp to decide on the next step of the appropriate conversion therapy. Accompanied by Nancy staying at a nearby hotel, Jared willingly goes in knowing his own internal feelings regardless of what his parents have been told about him in that half truth accusation. Jared's recent past leading up to this moment is told in flashback, an outwardly straight-laced existence of that centered on the church and the long-term "natural path" of marriage - which thus included Chloe (Madelyn Cline), a girlfriend in high school - and children. While Jared does his best to adhere to what is asked of him to tell his truth, that truth may set him on a path to what he needs to do for himself, the question then becoming whether he will be allowed to pursue that path, especially if it goes against Victor or his parents. Life is good for Brandon, now that he's one of the guys and dating hometown beauty Lana; however, he's forgotten to mention one important detail. It's not that he's wanted in another town for GTA and other assorted crimes, but that Brandon Teena was actually born a woman named Teena Brandon. When his best friends make this discovery, Brandon's life is ripped apart. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Boys in the Band Rated R | 1h 58min | Drama | 1970 (USA) Starring Kenneth Nelson, Peter White, Leonard Frey and Robert La Tourneaux It's Harold's Leonard Frey) birthday, and his closest friends throw him a party at Michael's (Kenneth Nelson) apartment. Among Harold's presents is "Cowboy" (Robert La Tourneaux), since Harold may have trouble finding a cute young man on his own now that he's getting older. As the party progresses the self-deprecating humor of the group takes a nasty turn as the men become drunker. Climaxed by a cruel telephone "game" where each man must call someone and tell him (or her?) of his love for them. Trivia: Stars all of the same actors from the original play. Some topics discussed were Greg's childhood problems, his homosexuality, and him contracting the HIV virus. Yes, I have seen this film and Mario Lopez is absolutely delicious! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Brokeback Mountain Rated R | 2h 14min | Drama, Romance | 2005 (USA) Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams and Randy Quaid Ennis )Heath Ledger) and Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two shepherds who develop a sexual and emotional relationship. Their relationship becomes complicated when both of them get married to their respective girlfriends. It's sad that Heath Ledger overdosed and died in 2008 at age 29. It all begins when Noam, a young Israeli soldier, serves in the reserve forces and meets at a check point a Palestinian young man called Ashraf. Following an incident during which Noam misplaces his ID card at the check point, Ashraf shows up on the doorstep of the apartment that Noam shares with a gay man and a straight woman. They barely have contact with the other citizens of this village, who consider Phil's family to be strange—Dianne is said to be able to talk with animals. However, they are often visited by Tereza, a lawyer, who always has some good advice for Phil. Phil does notice that something has changed between his mother and his sister and that they do not talk to each other anymore. He spends the last days of his summer holidays with his best friend Kat. When school begins, the mysterious Nicholas (Jannik Schümann) enters the class. Phil feels drawn to him and they soon engage in a passionate love affair, even though it turns Phil's feelings upside down because he does not know what Nicholas thinks of him. Furthermore, his friendship with Kat is tested because Phil's first love causes envy and jealousy. That joy turns to horror when Cameron mentions to the worldwide audience that Howard is gay, especially horrific to Howard as he is engaged to fellow teacher Emily Montgomery (Joan Cusack), a woman with self-esteem issues as she had battled weight issues most of her life before she lost seventy-five pounds for the wedding. Howard's life is totally disrupted as Hollywood media descends on Greenleaf in order to get Howard's story. The rest of Greenleaf also openly wonders if Howard is indeed gay, as he exhibits many stereotypical gay tendencies, such as being neat, and loving music, dancing, poetry and Barbra Streisand. His cause is not helped in that his and Emily's relationship has not yet been consummated. The one person not concerned is Emily, who trusts Howard. As Howard continues to deny being gay to his family, friends and colleagues, he begins to examine himself hypercritically if only because if others believe he's gay, there may be some merit to the claim, as well as because of an incident that occurs with Hollywood reporter Peter Malloy, who is doing a week-long piece on Howard leading up to his and Emily's wedding. While Sam's initial impression of Harry is still the same - self-absorbed, adolescent minded, the type of guy that strings girlfriends along until it becomes too messy for him - it isn't until midway through their trip that Sam views Harry in a slightly different light on an admission: that Harry had long ago come out as being pansexual. That discovery at least leads to them having a more fulsome discussion about their lives on the remainder of the drive. With bumps along the way over the next few years, Sam and Harry teeter on the brink of friendship to being in that same vein of friend for Sam that Malcolm was and Stasia still is.
